UL Crest

ULBC - Row hard but have fun

At UL we aim for the top. We row hard and train hard. We have excellent facilities and a first class coaching team. But we also aim to have a lot of fun. Throughout the year we have a succession of crew suppers and other events. Our training camps have often included an education in wine tasting. The year culminates with the ledgendary UL Beach Party, when the river front is transformed into a Carribean beach.

Who can row for UL?

Anyone who is an internal student at any of the colleges affiliated to the University of London is elible to row in student events.  If you do not qualify as a student, you can join Tyrian Club and row with UL in open events.  We are always interested in hearing from rowers who would like to join or from any ex-members who would like to re-establish contact or even start rowing again.

Not rowed before?

If you have never rowed, or only a bit, and are tall, you may have what it takes to reach the very top.  Come and talk to us. We will give you an honest assessment.  If you have the potential you can join our programme. If not, we can introduce you to your college rowing club so that you can enjoy the sport.

 Athlete Support

ULBC does not offer scholarships.  From observing other scholarship schemes we have learnt that they alter the athlete-coach relationship often in a destructive fashion, we also feel that people should row for UL because it is fun not because we pay them! All our athletes are aiming for the same goals, international representation and Henley wins.  To single any one athlete out would be wrong.  However we realise that London is expensive and so support our athletes in other ways.  We provide student housing close to the boathouse at a vastly reduced price (around £80/week), we also get plenty of free kit, discounted training camps, and are very good at getting athletes on TASS, and EIS support through the girls High performance programme.

Student life

We try to take advantage of London's awesome nightlife as much as we can.  Through out the year we have club nights both in and out, and have become experts at going out in London and keeping the costs down!  Highlights include the KCL and UCL fresher's weeks, Halloween, fours head, Club Dinner, Christmas Pudding eights, New Years Eve, Women's Head, Eights Head, Bumps Party, and Beach Party.   There is so much to do in London you can do six years of university and never get bored. Perhaps the best thing about UL as University is that all the degrees are recognised internationally as top rate qualifications.  Being in London also has you ideally placed for work experience.
