Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell and Matt Wells posted the fastest time of the day leaving a number of international athletes in their wake. As a late entry the 2x were only able to race for time and were duly sent off last of the elite doubles. This created problems with over taking prior to Barnes Bridge where a bottleneck ensued. The need to pass these crews was made more urgent by the chasing crew of Wells and Clarke. The 2x showed the composure you would expect from an Olympian and when they turned through Barnes bridge into a stiff head wind, they powered through the field crossing the finish line first winning by 17 seconds.
There was another win on the day for Allen/Young in the women’s IM3 2x in a time of 13:23, which would have won IM2 and IM1 double. The double of Entwistle/Oakes finished joint 4th overall in the women’s section while the lightweight 2x of Humphreys and Gayde struggled due to illness but still managed to finish 7th in women’s elite. The Senior men showed good pace while not setting the world alight, many were hampered by the boats which were borrowed for the day. The fastest of the 5 men’s 2x was Turner/Wright in a time of 12:42 while the slowest was 13:04. This shows a good strength in depth and as three of these athletes are new to the club I hope it is a sign of things to come. |
