UL's 1st eight took on a strong Goldie crew on Saturday and Sunday 13/14th of March. On the Saturday a row over the course showed the benefit that the Goldie crew have of getting multiple outings during the week and a rough looking UL eight struggled to keep pace @ 20 spm. The next morning UL took to the water in a new frame of mind and Edouard Blanc Goldi Coach commented "They look like a new crew, we wont have things our own way today". There were three races over 4 mins, the first took place on the outgoing tide around Hammersmith bend from a standing start. Considering our crew had not done a single start all year we acquitted ourselves well and lost 3/4 seats during the piece. The 2nd piece took place from the mile post to the HORR finish line and after starting a half a length up we held the Goldie crew well at a slightly lower rate. After coming off on the wrong side of a clash we went on to loose by one length. The final piece took place from the HORR finish to the mile post on the incoming tide. Goldie again won the piece by a similar distance but there were was no let of from a fiercely competitive group of athletes showing composure beyond their experience. The most encouraging comment of the weekend was by Donald Leggit "There seems to be a great set-up and athmosphere here".
