edit heading1Emily Gade wins Senior LIghtweight 1x at HWR
The weekend saw some gutsy and impressive racing from the UL girls at Henley Womens Regatta. Racing started on the Friday with a number of our athletes having to qualify through the time trials. Ruth Carpenter, Emily Gade in singles and the double of Aimee Broadbent and Therese Coen qualified with ease. Cat Stenhouse and Hermione Tuck where not so lucky in the senior double and just missed out. These girls are newer to UL and with more time at the club, they will improve exponentially to be key athletes to the club in the future. Ruth Carpenter’s first race in the senior single was unfortunate to be against one of the firm favorites in the event. Ruth was knocked out in a course record so can be happy that she pushed the Leeds sculler in a heat that was significantly faster than any others. Emily Gade eased through her first round in the Senior Lightweight single in true Emily style after recovering from a crab.

Competitive racing at Metropolitan Regatta was very valuable
Mens Elite 8+ Final 15:45:
We raced the final a few hours after the semi of Senior eights and the guys put the sore legs behind them to mix it up with the best in the country. The eight finished fifth behind a Brookes/Oxford composite, Thames, 1829, Leander. We did manage to finish in front of Moleseys eight which is planning to race the Ladies plate.

ULBC training camp, Aiguebelette, France, 29th March – 7th April
A few days after the Head of the River, 22 UL athletes headed to Aiguebelette in Southern France, for our Easter training camp. Despite the early start, the failure of one Henley finalist to book a ticket and a mad sprint (from a well known fast food emporium) to the plane by two members of the men’s squad, the journey to France was reasonably stress free. When we arrived at the rowing centre, which hosted the 1997 World Championships, we found a beautifully flat lake, bathed in sunshine and overlooked by the French Alps. When we awoke for our first day of training, however, we were greeted by overcast skies, occasionally interrupted by heavy rain and snow. Unfazed, Josh Pendry, one of UL’s newest athletes, predicted good weather after two days of rain based on ‘cracks’ in the cloud. Sadly he was wrong, but nonetheless, an optimistic spirit prevailed.

ULBC's men have two eights in the top 50 at HORR
As is always the case with any sporting event there were winners and losers over the weekend. Our 1st eight (49th) had been showing good progress over last weekend while training at Dorney. Unfortunately this speed never seemed to translate on the Tideway. There are many reasons as to why we didn't perform to the top of our ability on the day but these are only excuses and we will be doing some soul searching over the next two weeks on training camp. We hope this can make us stronger come the Summer.
The 2nd eight (35th) showed how if everyone in a crew buys into the same ethos they are capable of reaching their full potential. This was a very strong result and we are very proud of the guys from cox to bow.
While not being the results we had hoped for the strength in depth is encouraging with another four guys on the bank training hard, seats are going to be hard fought. For those who are disappointed with their results they must remember it is how we deal with bad results which defines us.

Juliette Haigh is re-seleceted for the New Zealand team.
Juliette Haigh came to UL towards the end of last year to help with her project to learn to scull at an international standard. She had previously been in the New Zealand pair for the Beijing Olympics. She has since turned back to the dark side and has been selected to compete in the World Cups in the pair. She hopes to be back over our way with a chance of teaming up with the New Zealand 2x to compete at Henley in the Princess Grace Challenge Cup.

ULBC take on the Challenge at the Snowdon Challenge
On the 5th of March ULBC took part in the first Snowdon Challenge. Each team had an ergo (rowing machine) on which they raced as a relay team. The race lasted for 20 minutes 15 seconds, which was Cambridge’s winning time in the 1950 race.
Nathanial Reilly O'Donnell and Cameron Nichol were forced to pull out on the day of the race. Forcing the club captain Fil Ljubicic and UCL President Alex Davidson to take on the challenge.
Against such Luminaries as Andrew Hodge and Alex Partridge we were always racing against the odds. Our team started well but the strength in depth of the others started to show after 4 minutes.
We finished 6th in a tight group for the last three place including IC and Oxford. Although no one wants to loose being close to the Oxford team with $ present blues (including the Winklvoss brothers) Hodge and Reed.
The club owes a depth of gratitude to Tom Broadway for burying himself for the cause. Thank you Tom.
